It is a common misconception that pregnant women become more energized during their third trimester, often compared to the first and second trimesters. This belief might arise from the numerous hormonal and physical changes occurring during the second trimester, leading some expectant mothers to feel less fatigued. However, is this perception accurate?
Deconstructing the Myth of Increased Energy in the Third Trimester
Dr. Riyan H Kurniawan, Sp.OG-(K)FER, a specialist in obstetrics and fertility at RS PELNI, sheds light on this misconception. He clarifies that while pregnant women might feel more refreshed and healthy during the second trimester, the notion of increased energy in the third trimester is untrue.
“The third trimester is actually a more demanding phase. The baby is growing rapidly, and pregnant women are more prone to feeling tired,” explains Dr. Riyan, who also practices at RSCM Kencana and RSCM Kintani.
The third trimester marks a period of rapid fetal growth, with a healthy fetus gaining up to 200 grams in weight every week. Concurrently, the pregnant woman gains approximately 0.5 kilograms per week. This substantial weight gain puts a significantly greater burden on the pregnant woman in the third trimester compared to the earlier stages of pregnancy.
This increased weight burden, along with other pregnancy-related changes, often contributes to fatigue and discomfort in various parts of the body, particularly in the legs. Consequently, instead of experiencing a surge in energy, the third trimester typically presents various challenges that require mothers-to-be to prioritize rest and self-care to ensure a healthy pregnancy and prepare for labor and delivery.
Listening to your body and prioritizing rest is crucial during the third trimester. If you're experiencing fatigue or discomfort, don't hesitate to seek guidance from your healthcare provider. They can offer personalized advice and support to manage the physical and emotional demands of this final stage of pregnancy.
