High blood sugar, medically termed hyperglycemia, poses significant health risks, potentially leading to serious conditions like diabetes and its associated complications. The Indonesian Ministry of Health recommends limiting daily sugar intake to a maximum of 10% of total daily caloric intake, roughly equivalent to 200 kcal. However, recognizing the early warning signs of high blood sugar is crucial for timely intervention and management.

Understanding the Causes and Mechanisms

Hyperglycemia arises primarily from the body's inefficient glucose utilization. This can be due to insufficient insulin production (type 1 diabetes) or insulin resistance (type 2 diabetes), among other factors. The excess glucose remains in the bloodstream, leading to the various symptoms discussed below. Essentially, the body struggles to convert glucose into energy, leading to a cascade of health problems.

Frequent urination and intense thirst are common initial symptoms. The kidneys work relentlessly to filter out excess glucose from the blood, increasing urine production and causing dehydration, hence the constant thirst. This constant need to urinate disrupts sleep and daily routines.

Unexplained weight fluctuations, particularly weight loss despite increased appetite, are another significant indicator. The body, starved for proper energy from glucose, begins breaking down muscle and fat for energy, leading to unintended weight loss. This phenomenon can cause significant weakness and fatigue.

Muscle weakness and persistent fatigue result from the body's inability to utilize glucose effectively. Without sufficient energy from glucose, the body struggles to perform daily tasks, leading to feelings of tiredness and overall weakness.

Vision problems such as blurry vision and difficulty focusing arise from glucose-induced swelling in the eye's lens. This swelling distorts the shape of the lens, impairing vision. Headaches are also common in this condition.

Slow-healing wounds are a consequence of impaired blood circulation caused by high blood sugar. This hinders the body's ability to repair damaged tissue, increasing the infection risk. In severe cases, minor injuries can lead to major complications, potentially requiring amputation.

Numbness and tingling sensations, often in the extremities, can result from nerve damage (neuropathy) associated with prolonged high blood sugar. This nerve damage, also known as diabetic neuropathy, can cause tingling, numbness, and often painful sensations, especially at night.

Skin changes, including skin tags, thickened and darkened skin, and increased susceptibility to fungal infections, are further indicators. These skin alterations often appear on the neck, armpits, and face. They suggest insulin resistance and rising blood sugar levels.

Increased risk of fungal infections, particularly yeast infections, is another significant sign. This heightened vulnerability to infections affects both men and women, leading to symptoms such as vaginal itching, redness, and painful urination.

Gum disease, resulting from increased glucose levels in saliva, promotes bacterial growth and plaque formation. This can escalate to periodontitis, causing gum recession, pus formation, and ultimately, tooth loss if left untreated. This is particularly problematic in individuals who already have pre-existing dental issues.
